The founder of R. Butcher & Sons carried out the surfacing and roadworks for the Beare family in the early years of Tulleys Farm, back when it was a working farm rather than the visitor attraction it is now.

That relationship carried into the next generation, with his son doing further surfacing there as the place grew. Both businesses are still going.

It is the answer we give when somebody asks what sixty years in a trade is actually worth. Not a certificate. A customer who has watched the work last long enough to tell you whether it did.

Why Laymac

Three generations of the same trade

Our family trade began around Devizes in Wiltshire. Regular contracts and estate work drew us east, and we moved our base to Sussex. Today the third generation runs Laymac from Horsham, with a fourth generation of Robert Butchers coming along, and the family's surfacing work reaches as far as Australia.

We look before we price
Every job gets a site visit. The quote comes back written and fixed with the construction set out, so you can compare it properly against anyone else.
Water first, surface second
We check the existing ground and where the water goes before recommending a surface. Preparation and drainage are part of the job from the start.
The person who quotes it turns up to do it
We are deliberately a small firm. The person who quotes your job is the person who turns up to do it, and we will tell you honestly when a surface does not need replacing.

Why does the old R. Butcher & Sons sign say Devizes?

Our family trade started around Devizes in Wiltshire. Regular contracts and estate work drew us east, so we moved our base to Sussex. Today the third generation runs Laymac Ltd from Horsham, working across Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire and Dorset.

What areas do you cover?

Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire and Dorset, working out from Horsham. We travel further for larger jobs, so if you are just outside that it is still worth asking rather than assuming the answer is no.

Do you charge for a quote?

No. We come out, walk the site with you, and give you a written price with the specification set out. If we think the job you have asked for is the wrong answer, we will say so on the visit rather than quote for it anyway.

Why are surfacing quotes so different from one another?

Nearly always depth. Two quotes can describe the same finished surface and specify completely different construction underneath, and once it is laid you cannot see which you got. Ours sets out the layers in writing so you can compare like for like.

Do you work on farms and estates as well as houses?

Most of what we do is rural. Farmyards, estate drives, equestrian yards, private roads and rural business sites, alongside domestic driveways. Three generations of the family have worked on farms and we plan the job around a site that has to keep running.

How long does the work take?

A domestic driveway is usually a few days. A farm track or a yard depends on how much has to come out and what the drainage needs. We give you a realistic timescale with the quote rather than an optimistic one, and we tell you if it changes.
