The Butcher Family Legacy

The story of our family business began in the early 1960s with Robert Butcher I, founder of R. Butcher & Sons. Long before modern surfacing machinery became commonplace, he was laying roads, operating rollers and building a reputation for dependable workmanship throughout the industry.

The photographs displayed on this page capture an important part of that history. They show not only the machinery and working methods of the time, but also the dedication, pride and determination that helped establish a family business which continues to this day.

Road Surfacing Specialists
Four Generations Of Surfacing

Today, the family tradition continues through Robert Butcher III, owner of Laymac Ltd, who was raised within the industry and learned the trade from previous generations. For more than six decades, the Butcher family has worked on farm roads, private roads, estate roads, industrial yards, commercial developments, surface dressing projects and resurfacing schemes throughout the UK.

The fourth generation is already represented by Robert Butcher IV, ensuring that the family’s connection to the surfacing industry continues into the future.

Continuing The Legacy

As both businesses continue to grow, we are proud to have played a part in the story of Tulleys Farm. Laymac Ltd proudly carries forward a family legacy that began more than 60 years ago. The photographs shown on this page are a reminder of where that journey started and the generations of experience that continue to shape our business today.

From R. Butcher & Sons in the 1960s to Laymac Ltd today, our commitment to quality workmanship, reliability and customer satisfaction remains unchanged.

Supporting The Growth Of Tulleys Farm

My grandfather, Robert Butcher I, founder of R. Butcher & Sons, carried out surfacing and roadworks for the Beare family during the early years of the farm’s development.

That working relationship continued through the next generation when my father, Robert Butcher II, completed further surfacing projects and improvements as the business expanded.
