Our work

Estate road surface dressing, Lock Farm Estate

Crack repairs and tar-and-chip surface dressing on the private estate road at Lock Farm Estate, a customer of the Butcher family since R. Butcher & Sons.

  • Partridge Green, West Sussex

What we did

How the job went

The job

Lock Farm Estate sits at Lock, near Partridge Green, and its roads are shared by the households at that end of the estate. The approach road had cracked along its length, with weeds growing up through the joints.

We cleaned out and sealed the cracks first, so the new surface had a sound road to bond to. Then we sprayed the binder, spread the chippings from the lorry and rolled them in. Tar-and-chip surface dressing seals the old road against water and gives it a fresh, grippy finish, without the cost of digging the road out and rebuilding it.

A customer across three generations

Our family has surfaced roads at Lock Farm Estate for many years, first as R. Butcher & Sons and now as Laymac. The work goes back to when the estate belonged to Mr Collins and has carried on with the families who live there now. Robert Butcher Senior has tarmacked and surface dressed the approach road for Adrian Weller, and the photographs include the two of them together on the estate.

In October 2026 Robert Butcher Senior was back at the estate entrance with Tony Robinson, who owns Lock Farm Estate, after we finished patch repairs on the road. The working relationship between our family and the estate spans generations and carries on through Laymac today.

The work continues

On 15 October 2026 we were back on the estate, surface dressing more of the lanes. The video shows the chip spreader laying the new stone onto the fresh binder.

Estate and farm roads need a contractor who understands a working rural property: farm vehicles, deliveries and residents who still need to get in and out while the work is done. That is the work the family has done in Sussex for decades.
