East Sussex is High Weald for the most part: steep, wooded, heavy underfoot and cut through with narrow lanes that were never built for what now drives down them. It is some of the most demanding ground we work on and some of the most rewarding.
The work here is dominated by access. Long private drives to properties set well back from the road, farm tracks on slopes where water runs rather than sits, and shared lanes serving several houses where nobody has been quite sure who maintains them. Around Lewes the chalk of the Downs changes the picture again and the drainage behaves entirely differently.
On sloping ground the falls and the cross drains matter more than the surface does. Get the water off a hillside track and it lasts. Leave it to run down the wheel ruts and it will not see out a winter.

Farm track had been breaking up for years and we had patched it twice. They dug it out properly, sorted the drainage first and it has been through a winter now without moving.
Yard resurfaced around a working farm. They phased it so we could still get the milk lorry in and out every day, which nobody else quoting for it had even mentioned.
