Surfacing
Tarmac & Asphalt
Machine-laid tarmac and asphalt for drives, yards, car parks and access roads.
Machine-laid tarmac and asphalt, laid hot and rolled properly. It is the surface most people picture when they think of this trade, and done well it is hard-wearing, quiet, easy to clear in winter and gives a clean finish that looks right in front of a house or across a working yard.
What our tarmac and asphalt service includes
New tarmac surfaces
Excavation, sub-base, binder course and surface course, built up in layers and compacted at each stage. The layers under the black are what decide whether a surface lasts, and they are also where corners get cut.
Overlays on a sound base
Where an existing surface is tired but still sound and the levels allow it, an overlay gives you a new surface for considerably less than taking it all up. We check the levels against thresholds, gullies and manholes first, because an overlay that drowns a doorstep is a problem you live with for years.
Coloured and specified finishes
Standard black is what most sites want. Where a red or buff finish is asked for, on an entrance or a marked-out area, we can lay it, and we will be straight with you about how it weathers.
Edgings and drainage details
Kerbs, edging blocks, channels and gullies. Tarmac fails from the edges inwards more often than from the middle, so a properly restrained edge is not a finishing touch, it is part of the construction.
How we work
- Measure and survey. Levels, falls and where the water is going to go.
- Written quote. The build-up specified in writing, so you can compare it properly against anyone else you ask.
- Excavate and prepare. Dig to depth, install any drainage, lay and compact the sub-base.
- Lay and roll. Binder course, then surface course, rolled while hot.
Materials and depths
The right depth depends entirely on what is going to drive on it. A domestic drive carrying a car does not need what a yard carrying loaded lorries needs, and quoting the same build-up for both is how a yard ends up rutted within a year. We specify to the traffic and set it out on the quote so you can see what you are getting.

What people say
In their words, not ours
Farm track had been breaking up for years and we had patched it twice. They dug it out properly, sorted the drainage first and it has been through a winter now without moving.
Yard resurfaced around a working farm. They phased it so we could still get the milk lorry in and out every day, which nobody else quoting for it had even mentioned.
Came out, walked the drive with us and told us it did not need replacing, just dressing. Saved us a lot of money and they still turned up to do the smaller job properly.

Questions we get asked about tarmac & asphalt
How long before I can drive on it?
You can usually walk on it the same day and drive on it the next. It stays slightly soft for a while as it cures, so we would avoid turning the wheels of a stationary car on it or standing anything with a narrow leg on it for the first few weeks.
Can you lay over my existing drive?
Often, if it is sound and the levels work. What stops it is usually the levels rather than the condition, because adding depth can bring the surface up to a doorstep or above a gully. We check that before quoting it as an option.
Why are quotes for the same job so different?
Nearly always depth. Two quotes can look like the same job and specify very different build-ups underneath, and you cannot see the difference once it is laid. Ours sets out the layers in writing so you can compare properly.
