Our roots around Devizes

Our family surfacing trade began around Devizes in Wiltshire under the name R. Butcher & Sons. That is why Devizes appears on the old vehicle signwriting. The name belongs to our family history, even though our base today is in Horsham.

How the business moved to Sussex

As regular contracts and estate work drew us further east, we moved our base to Sussex to be closer to the ground we cover day to day. The move followed the work and the relationships the family had built along the way.

Laymac today

Laymac Ltd is the current name for that family trade, run by the third generation out of Horsham. Today we work across Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire and back out towards Dorset, mostly on rural and commercial sites: farms, estates, equestrian yards, private roads, holiday sites and the driveways in between.

Our services include tarmac and asphalt, resin driveways, block paving, surface dressing, road planings, suitable recycled materials and the groundworks that support them. The construction we recommend depends on the site and how it is used.

The next generation

There is a fourth generation coming, and he is a Robert Butcher too. The family name and the trade continue to be part of the same story.

A small firm by choice

We are a small firm and that is deliberate. It means the person who quotes your job is the person who turns up to do it. It also means we will tell you when a surface does not need replacing, rather than recommend work you do not need.

We look at the ground, drainage and existing surface before putting the proposed work in writing. On farms and commercial sites, we discuss access and the work sequence so the job fits around the way the property operates.

A family relationship with Tulleys Farm

The founder of R. Butcher & Sons carried out surfacing and roadworks for the Beare family in the early years of Tulleys Farm, when it was a working farm. His son continued that relationship with further surfacing as the site grew, and the next generation of both families are friends today. It is part of the family trade that led to Laymac. Lock Farm Estate, Partridge Green

Lock Farm Estate is another customer the family has kept for generations. R. Butcher & Sons surfaced its roads when the estate belonged to Mr Collins, and the work has carried on with the families who live there now, including crack repairs and tar-and-chip surface dressing on the approach road. Our family in Australia

The Butcher family's connection with Australia goes back generations. Bobby Butcher, who runs Laymac today, is the great-grandson of George Butcher, who spent more than 15 years living and working there.

Today Bobby's uncle, Jason Butcher, owns RTB Civil, a surfacing and civil engineering company in Australia. Bobby works closely with Jason and travels out regularly to help on larger projects. That has included surface dressing in the Outback on remote cattle stations and at highway service stations, and tarmac work on estate roads, car parks and commercial yards. Laymac is not just a local surfacing company. Behind it are generations of family experience in the UK and Australia. That covers everything from a small domestic driveway to estate roads, commercial yards and civil engineering work. What has not changed is how we work: family values, careful workmanship and customers who come back to us for decades.
