Surfacing contractors in Surrey

Surrey packs an unusual amount of variety into a small county. Chalk runs along the North Downs above Guildford and Dorking, the greensand ridge sits just south of it, sandy heathland spreads west around Farnham and the wooded Low Weald clay lies below, taking in Cranleigh and the countryside around it. A surfacing specification that works on the heath will not hold on the clay a few miles away. We work across Surrey from our base in Horsham, which is close enough that a site visit is straightforward.

Ground conditions worth checking

On the Low Weald clay around Cranleigh, water is the recurring problem. Clay does not let it away, so it sits in the formation, softens it and lets the surface above rut and break at the edges. A track or drive here needs the falls, the ditches and the outfall sorted before anything is laid, because no depth of tarmac will hold over ground that stays wet. The sandy heath and greensand around Farnham behaves in the opposite way. It drains, but it can be loose, and the formation has to be properly compacted and restrained or the edges will simply spread. The chalk downland above Guildford and Dorking generally gives a firm formation, though gradients are the complication there: sloping approaches need the crossfall, the channel and the threshold detail worked out together so water leaves the surface where you want it to.

We check the existing ground and where the water goes before recommending a surface. That is the order the job has to be done in. A free site visit, then a written fixed price with the construction set out, so the preparation is visible in the quote rather than assumed.

The work Surrey asks for

A lot of it is private road surfacing. Surrey has a great many unadopted roads, shared approaches and estate roads serving several houses, and they tend to reach us once the potholes have become impossible to ignore. These jobs need a decision about whether the road is worn or actually failing, because resurfacing a road with a water problem underneath buys one season and no more. Beyond that we work for farms, estates and equestrian yards, on access roads, parking and turning for horseboxes and on yard surfaces chosen with footing in mind as well as load. Commercial sites, business parks and industrial yards make up another share, and domestic drives in and around Guildford, Cranleigh, Farnham and Dorking make up the rest, in tarmac, resin and block paving.

Access, plant and method

Surrey properties are often set back behind gates, walls and mature planting, and the space to turn a lorry or set down plant is limited. We establish at survey what can reach the working area and how far material has to be barrowed or carried from the unloading point, because that changes both the programme and the price. Trees close to an excavation are worth raising early as well.

Where the area is open, machine-laid asphalt and tarmac gives the most even result: consistent thickness, consistent compaction and fewer joins across a long drive or a car park. Where the approach is narrow, steep or broken up by steps, covers and thresholds, hand lay surfacing is the right method, laid and raked in smaller sections and compacted with plant that fits. On farm and estate access, road planings laid and compacted over prepared ground can be a practical construction, provided the material source and grading are known and the support beneath it is sound. Where the drive is the front of the house rather than a route to a yard, block paving offers the pattern and edge detail, with the restraint and drainage designed as part of the structure.
