Dorset is the far end of our patch and the most agricultural part of it. North Dorset in particular, the Blackmore Vale around Sherborne, Sturminster and Blandford, is dairy and mixed farming country, and dairy is hard on a surface in a way that arable is not.
A dairy unit runs a tanker in and out every day of the year regardless of the weather, over the same few metres of yard and entrance. That concentrated, repeated, heavy loading is what tears yards apart, and it is why the collection area almost always fails long before the rest of the site. We build those areas heavier because that is where the punishment is.
The vale is also heavy clay that holds water all winter, so drainage is not an optional extra here. It is most of the job.

Farm track had been breaking up for years and we had patched it twice. They dug it out properly, sorted the drainage first and it has been through a winter now without moving.
