We surface and resurface private roads, estate roads and access routes. Most of what we do is away from the public highway: the lane into a farm, the road round a business park, the drive through an estate, the access track to a holiday park. These are the roads that take real weight and rarely get properly maintained until something fails.
What our road surfacing service includes
Resurfacing an existing road
Where the base is sound, we plane off the worn surface course and lay a new one. That gives you a fresh, sealed, even road without the cost and disruption of a full reconstruction.
Full reconstruction
Where the road is failing rather than just worn, resurfacing it only buys a season. We dig out, deal with the drainage, build the sub-base back up properly and surface on top of a road that will actually hold.
Pothole and edge repairs
Cut out square, back to sound material, then fill and compact properly. A shovel of cold lay thrown into a wet hole is not a repair, and it is why the same potholes keep coming back in the same places.
Widening and passing places
On single-track farm and estate roads, a few well-placed passing places or a widened section at a pinch point often solves more than resurfacing the whole run would.
How we work
- Survey. We look at what the road carries, where the water goes and what is under the surface, because those three things decide the specification.
- Written quote. Fixed, with the build-up set out layer by layer.
- Programme. We agree access and phasing first. A farm still needs its milk lorry in and a business still needs its deliveries, so we plan the work around that rather than closing the road and hoping.
- Construction. Excavation, drainage, sub-base, binder and surface course, each compacted as it goes.
Drainage decides how long a road lasts
Almost every failed private road we are called to has a water problem rather than a surfacing problem. Water sitting on or under a road takes it apart from beneath, and no amount of new tarmac on top will hold if the drainage is wrong. We look at the falls, the ditches and the gullies as part of the survey, and where the fix is drainage we say so rather than selling you a surface that will not last.

Questions we get asked about road surfacing
Do we need to close the road while you work?
Rarely for the whole job. We normally phase the work so there is a way in and out throughout, which matters on a working farm or a business site. We agree that with you before we start rather than turning up and blocking the only entrance.
Can you just fill the potholes instead?
Sometimes that is genuinely the right answer and we are happy to do it. Where the potholes keep returning in the same spots, that is the road telling you the base or the drainage has gone, and patching it again is throwing good money after bad.
How do I know whether I need resurfacing or reconstruction?
That is what the survey is for. If the surface is worn but the road is not moving or holding water, resurfacing is enough. If it is rutting, cracking in a pattern or soft underfoot, the problem is deeper and we will tell you.
