Cranleigh drives are rarely just a car parked in front of a house. Out through the lanes towards Ewhurst, Rudgwick and Alfold it is long private approaches, yards, and access that has to take a horsebox or a delivery lorry as often as a car.
Building for what actually uses it
This matters more than people expect. A drive built for cars will rut where a loaded horsebox turns, and it will fail at the gateway first, because that is where vehicles slow, turn and stand. If a horsebox, a tractor or a feed delivery uses your drive, tell us, because it changes the depth and it changes where we put the money.
The usual answer on a long rural approach is not one surface throughout. A bound surface near the house and the yard, where you want it clean and firm underfoot, and stone further out where the traffic is heavier and the appearance matters less. That is normally better value than a single specification along the whole length.
Horseboxes and turning
A horsebox is long, heavy and does not reverse well. It needs a turning area it can use in one movement and an entrance it can take without grounding or spinning up. Loose stone right by a yard is also a nuisance around horses. Both point towards a bound surface at the yard end and a properly built turning head, which is worth more than smartening up the run.
Surrey Hills ground
Much of the area sits on Weald clay, which holds water and moves. A drive here needs its water taken away and a base compacted in layers. On the sandier ground rising towards the hills the problem inverts: it drains freely but it is loose, and a surface will spread under load without proper restraint.
