Private road surfacing in West Sussex
Private roads, estate roads and shared lanes across West Sussex surfaced, resurfaced and repaired, with drainage designed first so the road lasts.
We surface, resurface and repair private roads in West Sussex: estate drives, shared lanes serving a few houses, farm approaches and the roads inside business parks and rural sites. A private road is unadopted, so the people who use it pay for it, and the point of a good specification is that they pay once.
Resurface, overlay or dress
The first decision on any West Sussex private road is which of three jobs it needs. A road that is sound but tired can be surface dressed with tar and chippings for a fraction of the cost of new tarmac. A road that is firm but worn can take a tarmac overlay. A road that is moving, sinking or breaking up needs its failed sections rebuilt before either. We assess the road by section rather than pricing the whole length the same way, and our dressing or resurfacing guide explains how we decide.
Roads on clay, chalk and greensand
Around Horsham and across the Low Weald the clay holds water, and a private road there fails from the edges and the low points first. Ditches, grips and kerbing decide whether the new surface lasts. On the Downs and the coastal plain the ground drains better and the road is mostly about the surface itself. We design for the ground under the road, not the county name.
Shared roads and management companies
Many West Sussex private roads are owned by a group of households or a residents' management company. We give one written specification that every party can read and compare, phase the work so nobody is cut off from their house, and keep access for deliveries, refuse collection and emergency vehicles throughout.
What the quote sets out
We measure the road, inspect the construction and drainage, and write down which sections are repaired, which are overlaid or dressed, and what the edges and drainage will be. Explore our road surfacing service for the wider options, or see our coverage of West Sussex.
- Private roads, estate roads and farm access, not just driveways
- Drainage assessed as part of the survey rather than ignored
- Access kept open and phased around your working day
- Repairs cut out square and done properly, not filled with cold lay
- Fixed written quotes with the build-up set out layer by layer

Road Surfacing in West Sussex: common questions
Can you resurface a shared private lane without closing it?
Usually yes. We work in sections and keep one lane open, plan the day around deliveries and refuse collection, and agree with the residents which days the entrance to each house will be affected.
Will one quote cover the whole road when the sections are in different condition?
Yes, and it will say which section gets which treatment. A road rarely needs the same job end to end, and paying for full resurfacing on a section that only needs dressing is the most common waste we see.
