Road planings in West Sussex

Road planings laid and compacted for suitable West Sussex tracks and hardstanding. Ground preparation and material suitability are part of the job.

  • 5.0 from 10 reviews

We lay road planings in West Sussex for tracks, farm access and working hardstanding. If you are searching for road planing, it is worth separating two different jobs. One is milling the surface off an existing road. The other, which is what this page covers, is laying and compacting the reclaimed asphalt material that comes out of that process. We are surfacing contractors laying the material, and preparation and compaction are part of the work rather than an extra.

What planings are, and where they suit

Planings are recovered asphalt from road maintenance. Laid over prepared ground and properly compacted, they make a sound and economical construction for a farm track, an estate access route, a yard or an area of hardstanding where a refined finish is not the point. They are not the same as freshly laid tarmac. Texture, binding and performance vary with the source material, the preparation and the use it gets, and we will not tell you that a warm week and some passing traffic will turn a loose load into a new road. For tight turning, constant car use or a domestic entrance where appearance leads, machine-laid asphalt and tarmac or block paving is usually the better answer, and we will say so.

West Sussex ground, and why the survey matters

For a site around Horsham, Petworth, Midhurst or Chichester, the ground changes what the track needs. The Wealden clay across much of the Horsham area holds water and softens under load, so a shallow surface rut and a soft area that yields under weight are two different problems with two different answers. Tipping planings over a wet, unprepared track adds weight to ground that is already struggling, and it will rut again by the following winter. On the greensand around Petworth and Midhurst the ground drains more freely but can be loose, so the question becomes whether the formation will hold compaction. On the chalk of the Downs the formation is often sound already and the work is largely about the profile and getting water off the surface. We assess the support beneath, the route water takes and the vehicles that use it before deciding whether planings belong in the construction at all.

Material, levels and compaction

The material has to be defined, not just described. A phrase such as recycled tarmac establishes nothing about grading, condition or suitability. The source and classification matter: some older asphalt can contain coal tar, and unsuitable or unclassified waste must never be treated as ordinary surfacing material. Any material we propose has to be suitable and lawful for the intended use, and that goes in the scope alongside the depth, the profile and the compaction method. Narrow Wealden lanes also decide how the material arrives, so we check at the survey what size of vehicle can reach the working area and where it can tip.

What the quotation covers

The area and access, the ground preparation needed, the proposed material and construction, the drainage, edge details and intended finish, and the limitations and future maintenance to allow for. Site visits are free and we walk the route with you rather than pricing from a photograph. The price that follows is fixed and in writing, with the construction set out, so you are comparing a laid and compacted surface rather than a delivered load. This is an installation service. Road milling and supply-only material sales are separate requirements and should not be assumed from this page.

Road Planings in West Sussex: common questions

Does road planing mean removing my existing road?

It can describe that different activity. This page concerns laying and compacting reclaimed material, so please do not assume a milling service from the name. Tell us which of the two you need and we will say whether it is work we do.

Are planings the same as new tarmac?

No. They are reclaimed asphalt, and a laid and compacted planings surface has different characteristics from a newly specified asphalt pavement. Texture and binding vary with the source material, the preparation and the traffic it carries.

Will planings work on a wet West Sussex clay track?

Only if the drainage and the support beneath are dealt with first. Wealden clay holds water and softens under load, so material tipped onto a soft track will rut again. We look at the falls, the ditches and what is below before we quote.
