Farm track surfacing in East Sussex

Farm tracks, estate drives and rural access across East Sussex, from the High Weald to the Downs. Built to carry the traffic that actually uses them, with the water dealt with first.

  • 5.0 from 10 reviews

We build and repair farm tracks and rural access routes in East Sussex for farms, estates, vineyards, equestrian yards and rural businesses. Much of the county is the High Weald: steep, wooded, clay-based and wet through the winter, and a track there is a drainage job before it is a surfacing job.

Tracks in the High Weald and on the Downs

Around Uckfield, Heathfield and Crowborough the ground is clay over sandstone and tracks run downhill, so water runs down them. Grips, cross drains and a crowned or cambered profile shed it sideways before it can scour the surface. On the chalk of the Downs above Lewes the ground drains itself and the construction can be lighter. We build to the ground we find, not to a standard county drawing.

Stone, planings or a bound surface

Crushed stone to dust remains the right answer for most field access. Road planings compact into a harder running surface for busier routes and yard approaches. Where a track meets the road and carries lorries, a tarmac or surface-dressed entrance keeps mud off the highway and protects the stone track behind it. Our planings or stone guide compares them.

Vineyards, estates and equestrian yards

East Sussex has more vineyards every year, and their tracks carry pickers, trailers and visitors on the same few weeks. Equestrian yards need a surface that horses and lorries can both use. Estates want a drive that looks right in the landscape and still takes a delivery. Each of those is a different specification and we write it down.

Grants

Some tracks qualify for the Countryside Stewardship RP4 hardcore track grant, which sets a minimum width and depth of stone. Where it applies we build to it. Our farm track cost guide covers the grant and what drives the price per metre.

What the quote sets out

We walk the route with you, measure it and look at where the water goes, then give a price per metre with the construction written down. Explore our rural and farm access service, or see our coverage of East Sussex.

Before you ring

Rural & Farm Access in East Sussex: common questions

Do you work on steep tracks in the High Weald?

Yes. Steep tracks need the water managed before anything else: cross drains and a cambered profile to shed it sideways, and a surface that will not wash. We assess the gradient and the run-off on the visit and design for it.

Can a vineyard track be surfaced between seasons?

That is usually the best time. We plan the work for the quiet weeks and phase it so the winery and the yard stay open.
