Most of our work is rural, and rural sites have problems that a domestic contractor does not meet. Access for a low loader. A milk lorry that comes whatever the weather. A yard that has to keep working while it is being surfaced. Ground that has been made up over a century of farming and is different every ten yards.
What our rural surfacing service includes
Farmyards and collection areas
Hardstanding that copes with tankers, telehandlers and loaded trailers, laid to falls that get slurry and rainwater to where you need it rather than to where you do not.
Equestrian yards and access
Access roads, parking and turning for horseboxes, and yard surfaces chosen with grip and footing in mind rather than just load.
Estate and country house drives
Long approach drives, courtyards and service access, finished to suit the property. On listed and conservation sites the appearance is part of the specification and we work to what has been agreed.
Diversification and visitor sites
Farm shops, holiday lets, glamping sites, wedding venues and campsites. These bring public traffic and public expectations onto a farm, which usually means proper parking, a surface that copes with wet-weather visitors and access that a car can use without grounding.
How we work
- Walk the site with you, in the weather if we can, because a farm looks very different in February.
- Written quote with the build-up set out and the phasing agreed.
- Programme around the farm. Milking, collections, harvest and stock movements come first, and we work round them.
- Construct, keeping access open throughout.
Working on a live farm
We have worked on farms and estates for three generations and we know a yard cannot shut for a fortnight. We phase the work so there is always a way in for the tanker and the feed lorry, we keep the site tidy because stock and loose stone do not mix, and we agree the sequence with you before we start rather than discovering the problem on day two.

Farm track had been breaking up for years and we had patched it twice. They dug it out properly, sorted the drainage first and it has been through a winter now without moving.
Yard resurfaced around a working farm. They phased it so we could still get the milk lorry in and out every day, which nobody else quoting for it had even mentioned.

Questions we get asked about rural & farm access
Can you work around milking and collections?
Yes, and we plan for it before we start. Tell us the times that cannot move and we will build the programme around them. It is a normal part of working on a dairy unit.
Our yard is a mixture of concrete, stone and mud. Can it be done in one go?
Usually it is better not to. Different areas take different punishment and often need different build-ups, and doing the worst area properly beats doing the whole yard thinly. We will walk it with you and set out the options.
We are opening a farm shop. What do we need for visitor parking?
More than you would expect, mostly because of wet weather and because visitors are far less tolerant of a rutted surface than you are. It is worth getting the parking, the turning and the drainage right at the outset, and we will talk you through what the site needs.
