Reclaimed road planings laid and compacted for suitable tracks and hardstanding, with the material and ground assessed before use.
We lay road planings for suitable access tracks and working areas. Planings are recovered asphalt material from road maintenance. They can be an option for a practical surface, but the grading, condition and intended use need checking. Reclaimed material should be selected for a job, not accepted solely because it is inexpensive.
We inspect the support beneath the surface, the route water takes and the vehicles using it. Ruts may indicate a drainage or bearing problem that another layer will not solve. Where the existing construction is reusable, preparation can include reshaping and local repairs before the specified material is laid.
The installation needs an agreed depth, profile and compaction approach. Those depend on the material and the supporting ground. The entrance, edges and any retained surfaces must work with the new levels. A load spread over an unprepared wet area is not an equivalent job.
A compacted planings finish differs from freshly laid asphalt. Texture and performance vary with the source material, preparation and use. We do not promise that warm weather or passing vehicles will turn loose planings into a new tarmac road. For tight turning, intensive use or a refined domestic finish, another construction may be more appropriate.
The source and classification matter. Some older asphalt can contain coal tar, and unsuitable or unclassified waste must not be treated as ordinary surfacing material. Any proposed material must be suitable and lawful for the particular use. We discuss the material specification as part of the installation scope.

Common questions
Road planings give a harder, smoother, near dust-free running surface because the old bitumen in them binds under the roller and the sun; crushed stone drains better, can be regraded for years and copes with livestock. For vehicle tracks, yards and hardstanding, planings are usually the better value. For cow tracks, boggy ground or anywhere that needs to drain through, stone wins.

No. They are reclaimed asphalt material. A laid and compacted planings surface has different characteristics from a newly specified asphalt pavement.
They need adequate support for the intended use. An existing track may provide that, or preparation and additional construction may be needed. We assess it before setting out the work.
