Road planings are the material milled off a road when it is resurfaced. Laid and rolled properly they bind into a firm, dark, hard-wearing surface for a fraction of what new tarmac costs, which makes them a sensible answer for a lot of farm tracks and yards around Winchester.

Being straight about what they are
Planings are not tarmac and we would not tell you otherwise. The finish is a dark, slightly textured working surface, firmer and cleaner than stone but not as smooth or as long-lived as a new laid road. For a farm track or a yard that is usually exactly the right trade-off, and for a smart entrance it is not.
They also need the right conditions to bind. Laid and rolled in warm weather with traffic over them afterwards, they knit together well. Tipped loose in a wet January and left, they stay loose and you will be disappointed.
Supply only, or supply and lay
If you have a machine and want to spread them yourself, we will deliver by the load and that is the cheapest way to do it. If you want the job done, we bring the material, grade the falls so water runs off, and roll it while it is workable. The rolling is the part most people skip and it is the part that decides whether the surface binds or stays as loose chippings.

Can I collect them myself?
We can supply by the load delivered to site. If you are laying them yourself, get them rolled and do it in warm weather, because that is what makes them bind rather than sit loose.
Will planings do for a farm entrance off the road?
Often yes, provided the base is sound and it is laid at a sensible depth. An entrance takes turning traffic, so it wants more depth than the run of a track, and we would look at how it meets the highway as part of the quote.
