Brickwork & Patios

Brickwork and garden walls in Sussex and Surrey

Garden, boundary and retaining walls, entrance piers, brick steps and extension brickwork, built on a proper footing.

  • 5.0 from 10 reviews

We build brickwork as well as laying the surface in front of it. Garden walls, boundary walls along the road, retaining walls that hold back a bank, entrance piers for gates, brick steps and the brickwork on extensions and new builds. Doing the walls and the drive together means one firm sets the levels, the drainage and the finish, rather than two trades working around each other.

What our brickwork service includes

Garden and boundary walls

Front garden walls, boundary walls and dwarf walls with piers, in a brick chosen to match the house or the street. We finish them with brick-on-edge or stone copings so the top sheds water.

Retaining walls

Walls that hold back a bank or a change in level carry real load and need drainage behind them, or the water pressure will push them over in time. We build them on a proper footing, with weep holes and free-draining backfill.

Entrance piers and gateways

Brick piers for gates and entrances, built to take the weight of the gate and set out so the gate hangs and closes properly.

Steps and features

Brick steps to a front door or garden, planters, and decorative work such as arches and round window surrounds.

Extensions and new builds

Brickwork for extensions, garages and new-build homes, working to the drawings and alongside the other trades on site.

How we work

  1. Site visit to look at the ground, the levels and the brick you want to match.
  2. Written price with the footing, the brick and the coping set out.
  3. Footings first. A wall is only as good as what it stands on, and on Sussex clay that matters.
  4. Build and finish, with the joints pointed and the site left clean.

Before you ring

Questions we get asked about brickwork & garden walls

Do I need planning permission for a front garden wall?

Usually not if it is no more than one metre high next to a road, or two metres elsewhere. Listed buildings and conservation areas have their own rules, so check with your council if either applies.

Can you match the brick on my house?

Usually, yes. We look at the existing brick and source the closest match, and we can show you samples before we order.

Can you build the wall and lay the driveway at the same time?

Yes, and it is the best way to do it. One firm sets the levels and the drainage for both, so the wall and the surface meet properly.
