Surfacing

Block paving contractors in Horsham and across West Sussex

Block paving laid for driveways, entrances and parking areas, with the layout and supporting construction designed around daily use.

  • 5.0 from 10 reviews

We lay block paving for driveways and entrances where customers want a choice of colour, pattern and edge detail. The blocks are one part of the work. The support beneath them, edge restraint and drainage need equal attention if the finished area is to remain useful.

Planning the layout

We measure the available parking and turning space and discuss how it is used. A layout should suit vehicle movements as well as the view from the road. Steps, paths, gate openings and inspection covers can be incorporated into the plan before the pattern is set out.

Edges and retained features

Existing walls, kerbs and planting can influence where the new paving ends. We identify what can remain and what needs rebuilding. Edge restraint is a structural detail, not simply a decorative border, and should be included in the scope.

Preparation and bedding

The excavation and supporting layers depend on the ground and expected loading. A car parking space and an entrance used by delivery vehicles do not automatically need the same detail. We set out the construction before placing the paving, rather than relying on thicker blocks to solve weak ground.

Conventional or permeable paving

Conventional block paving needs an appropriate surface water arrangement. Permeable block paving uses a different designed construction, including its joints and supporting layers. It is not ordinary paving made permeable by leaving wider gaps. The choice should follow the site drainage assessment and any applicable requirements.

Installation and future access

  1. Agree the layout, finish, drainage and limits of the work.
  2. Prepare the formation and specified supporting layers.
  3. Set edges, covers and levels, then lay the selected pattern.
  4. Complete jointing and compaction for the chosen construction.

Individual blocks can often be lifted for access or local repair, although matching weathered paving later may be difficult. Keep spare blocks if available, and raise any planned utility work before installation. We discuss joint maintenance and cleaning as part of caring for the finished driveway.

Common questions

Problems we are asked about

Why is my block paving sinking?

Block paving sinks because the sub base under it was too thin, was not compacted properly, or has been washed out by water. The blocks themselves rarely fail. A dip by the house is usually a leaking downpipe or drain; ruts in the wheel tracks mean the whole base is too weak for the load.

Questions we get asked about block paving

Is block paving permeable?

Some purpose-designed systems are. Conventional paving and permeable paving use different jointing and construction, so the specification needs to make the distinction clear.

Can you reuse existing blocks?

Potentially, depending on their condition, quantity and suitability for the intended construction. Lifting and relaying still needs a sound base and appropriate edge restraint.

Will weeds grow through block paving?

Seeds and debris can collect in joints. Appropriate cleaning and joint maintenance are still needed; no driveway should be sold as permanently maintenance-free.
