Driveways and surfacing in Southwater

Southwater is three miles south of Horsham, close enough that it is home ground for us. We cover the village and the area around it, including Christ's Hospital, Itchingfield, Barns Green, Copsale and Mannings Heath.

Built on brick clay

Southwater grew up around its brickworks, and Southwater Country Park sits in the old clay pits. The same heavy clay is under most of the village. It holds water, swells when wet and shrinks in dry summers, and it is behind most of the cracked and sunken drives we are asked to look at here. A drive on this ground needs a proper depth of compacted stone and somewhere for the water to go.

Driveways on newer estates

Much of Southwater has been built in the last thirty years. Drives laid at build stage are often thin, and after a few winters they show it. Sometimes a properly bonded overlay is enough. Sometimes the base has failed and needs digging out. We tell you which, and why.

Farms and rural access

West of the village, towards Itchingfield and Barns Green, there are farm tracks, yards and long private drives. For those, road planings, stone tracks or surface dressing are often better value than tarmac.
