South of the Downs the country opens out into the coastal plain, and the farming changes with it. This is large-scale arable and horticulture, with grain stores, packhouses and glasshouse sites that need yards and access built for articulated lorries rather than tractors.
The ground is flat, which sounds easier and is not. Flat ground gives you very little natural fall to work with, so drainage has to be designed rather than assumed, and a yard laid without enough crossfall will pond every winter. Getting the falls right on a big flat yard is most of the skill in the job.
