Ringwood sits on the eastern edge of the New Forest, on gravel and heath rather than clay or chalk. That ground drains freely, which is a real advantage, but it is also loose, and a surface built on it without proper compaction and restraint will spread and rut under load.
There is a lot of equestrian and smallholding work in this area, along with holiday and visitor sites on the Forest fringe. Visitor parking on gravel ground is its own problem: it looks fine in August and turns into ruts and potholes by February unless it is built and drained for winter use.

Farm track had been breaking up for years and we had patched it twice. They dug it out properly, sorted the drainage first and it has been through a winter now without moving.
