Driveways and surfacing in Haywards Heath
Laymac Ltd covers Haywards Heath and the villages around it. Tell us what needs doing and we will come and look at it.
Haywards Heath is around thirteen miles east of Horsham, in the middle of Mid Sussex. We work across the town and the villages around it: Cuckfield, Lindfield, Ardingly, Balcombe and Scaynes Hill.
Slopes, trees and older houses
A lot of Haywards Heath is built on rising ground at the edge of the High Weald, and many of the older Victorian and Edwardian houses have drives that climb or drop from the road. On a slope the job is mostly about water. Rain runs down the drive and has to be collected before it reaches the garage or the house, with a channel, a soakaway or a permeable edge. Mature trees are the other common issue, because roots lift a surface and digging near them needs care. We look at both at the site visit.
Conservation areas and front gardens
Lindfield and Cuckfield both have conservation areas, and in front gardens across the district the drainage of a new drive matters for planning. A permeable surface, or one that drains onto your own land, normally avoids the need for permission. Our guide on planning permission for a new driveway explains the rule. Resin bound and permeable block paving both suit it.
Rural roads and estates
Out towards Ardingly and Balcombe there are long private drives, farm approaches and equestrian yards. For those, tar-and-chip surface dressing or a well built stone track is often better value than tarmac from end to end.

Arranging a site visit
Send the address, a rough size or route length and a few photographs of the whole entrance or road, not just the worn patch. Tell us the heaviest vehicle that uses it and anything planned nearby, such as building work or new services. Ring 0330 043 6081 or use the quote form and we will arrange a time to come and look. The price follows in writing, with the construction set out.

Surfacing in Haywards Heath: your questions
Do I need planning permission for a new drive in Haywards Heath?
Usually not, if the surface is permeable or drains onto your own land. Laying more than five square metres of non-permeable surface that drains to the road needs permission. Conservation areas in Lindfield and Cuckfield can add other considerations, so check with Mid Sussex District Council if you are in one.
Can you lay a drive near a large tree?
Often, yes. We keep excavation shallow near roots where we can and choose a construction that copes with some movement. It depends on the tree and how close it is, which is why we look first.
