Shaftesbury sits on a greensand ridge with the ground dropping away sharply on almost every side, which makes for steep approaches and some genuinely awkward access.
Steep and soft together is the difficult combination. Greensand does not hold like chalk, so on a slope a surface can creep downhill under repeated braking and turning unless it is properly restrained and built on a compacted base. Getting the water off before it gains momentum matters just as much. The farms below the ridge sit back on vale clay again, which is a different job entirely.
