Lewes is chalk, and chalk changes the job. It drains freely and makes a good formation, so surfaces built on it can last very well. What it does not tolerate is water concentrated in one place, and chalk can be unforgiving when a soakaway is put in the wrong spot.
The town itself brings its own constraints: narrow streets, a conservation area, tight access and properties where a modern surface would look out of place. Outside it, the Downs bring long farm tracks and estate access on ground that is a pleasure to build on.

Farm track had been breaking up for years and we had patched it twice. They dug it out properly, sorted the drainage first and it has been through a winter now without moving.
