Driveways and surfacing in Burgess Hill
Laymac Ltd covers Burgess Hill and the villages around it. Tell us what needs doing and we will come and look at it.
Burgess Hill is about thirteen miles south-east of Horsham, on the flat ground below the South Downs. We cover the town and the villages around it, including Hassocks, Ditchling, Hurstpierpoint, Keymer and Wivelsfield.
Flat clay, and where the water goes
Most of Burgess Hill sits on low-lying Weald clay. Flat ground sounds easy to surface, but it gives water nowhere to go, and clay will not let it soak away. A drive laid dead level on clay ends up with puddles that freeze and break the surface. We set the falls deliberately, even if they are slight, and lead the water to a channel, a gully or a permeable section where it can drain.
Newer homes
The town has grown a lot, and plenty of drives on newer estates were laid quickly at build stage on a thin base. If yours is sinking at the edges or cracking where you turn the car, the fix is usually a proper sub-base rather than another top layer. We will tell you honestly if an overlay will do the job instead. See can you lay tarmac over an existing driveway.
Industrial estates and yards
The industrial estates on the edge of Burgess Hill have yards and car parks that take heavy, turning traffic every day. We build those to the load and phase the work so the site keeps running. See commercial and industrial surfacing.

Surfacing in Burgess Hill: your questions
My new-build drive is already sinking. What can be done?
Usually the base underneath was too thin for the clay. We dig out the failing areas, put in a compacted stone sub-base and relay the surface. If only the top is worn, a properly bonded overlay can be enough, and we will say so.
Do you cover Hassocks and Hurstpierpoint?
Yes. We cover Burgess Hill and the villages around it, including Hassocks, Hurstpierpoint, Ditchling, Keymer and Wivelsfield.
