Alton sits where the chalk gives way to the clay and greensand of the East Hampshire hangers, and that boundary runs right through the work. Two farms a few miles apart can need genuinely different construction.
On the hanger ground the recurring problem is springs. Water emerges partway down a slope, often exactly where a track crosses, and a surface laid over an active spring will fail no matter how well it is built. Finding it and piping it away is the job. Laying tarmac over it is not.
