Heathfield is high, exposed and properly agricultural, sitting on the High Weald ridge with land falling away on both sides. Farms here are mostly livestock and mixed, with yards that take daily traffic in all weathers.
Being up on the ridge means the ground sheds water quickly, which is a help, but it also means it arrives somewhere in a hurry. Culverts and cross drains under a track are what keep it intact through a wet spell, and they are the first thing to check when a track that was fine last year suddenly is not.

Farm track had been breaking up for years and we had patched it twice. They dug it out properly, sorted the drainage first and it has been through a winter now without moving.
