East Grinstead sits on the High Weald in the north-east corner of West Sussex, about sixteen miles from our Horsham base. We cover the town and the villages around it, including Forest Row, Felbridge, Ashurst Wood, Sharpthorne and Dormansland, and out to the edge of Ashdown Forest.
Steep lanes and long drives
The ground here rises and falls, and many properties have long drives that run downhill from the lane or climb up to the house. Tarmac and tar-and-chip surface dressing both hold well on slopes. Loose gravel generally does not.
Trees and woodland
Around Forest Row and Ashdown Forest, drives often run under mature trees. Roots lift surfaces and leaf fall keeps a drive damp, which shortens the life of some finishes. We look at the trees at the site visit and keep excavation away from roots where we can.

There are many unadopted roads and shared lanes around East Grinstead. What is the best surface for a steep drive?
Tarmac and tar-and-chip surface dressing both grip well and stay put on a slope, as long as the water is controlled. Loose gravel tends to wash down. Resin bound can work on moderate gradients. We advise on yours at the site visit.
